Hey Friends!
I’m Janna Zonder. Welcome to The Hump Day Gazette!
I got the idea for this newsletter last year when I noticed that signs for speed bumps had been changed to speed “humps.” I thought, “Wow, somebody got paid for coming up with this.”
Of course, my mind skittered into the gutter for a minute. I mean, really, “speed humps?” Think about it.
Being the high-minded individual that I am, I quickly lifted my thoughts out of the gutter and felt a tickle of laughter arise in me. It’s a homely word. Hump. One thinks of spitting camels. Sad-sack criminals. Or, Wednesdays, when you’re exhausted and only halfway to the weekend.
Truth is, I was in a slump with my next novel, and I created The Hump Day Gazette to lift my own spirits, laugh a little, and to connect with people through a different medium. It’s been going strong for three years now, and I felt it was time to give it more room to grow on Substack.

As a paid subscriber, you will have access to the archives of the Gazette, as well as to other work I’ve done and will be doing, perhaps a podcast, music videos, the community forum, and — Hey, I’ve even been thinking of serializing my next novel.
Kind of like Dickens did. Charles. Not little Jimmy Dickens.

A little more about me . . .
I like making people laugh. My husband and I are both musicians who perform musical comedy and parodies together, along with more serious music. I aspire to writing humor that also asks some of the big questions. Even in the saddest of stories, I try to find something to laugh about. My humorous short story, “Who Kills The Bugs For The Dalai Lama?” was published in the inaugural issue of Litmosphere Literary Journal. My essay, “When Facts Obscure The Truth,” about the difficulty of proving rape in a court of law was published the following year in the same journal.
My novel, Magenta Rave, is a fast-paced, gripping mystery, with complex characters, and an outrageous plot. Focused on sexual assault survivors and the desire for revenge, the plot will keep you guessing until the end. You’ll even find humor in Magenta Rave. At least, some of the characters are laughing, but not all. Not the sexual predators. They see nothing funny about it at all.
